Dear Disaster Diary,

The roots of education are bitter, but the fruit is sweet.

After the Flood: Battling Mold

Removing Mold:

As soon as you notice the first signs of mold on walls, ceilings, or wallpaper, it's essential to act promptly.

Read instructions:

Mold spores can harm your health – and so can some mold removal products.

Pay attention to the safety and usage instructions provided on the packaging. Wear protective clothing. When working, wear safety goggles, rubber gloves, and an FFP2/N95 mask. Keep unnecessary people away.

Ventilation:

Close doors to other rooms. Mold spores released into the air can spread everywhere. Keep the room well-ventilated while working.

Spraying surfaces:

If you're using a mold remover, spray the affected area. Wipe the treated surface only after the recommended exposure time, using damp paper towels. Immediately bag and dispose of used towels.

Removing wallpaper:

Affected parts of wallpaper must be removed. But first, kill the mold with a mold remover, then tear off the wallpaper, bag it, and dispose of it in the trash.

Using household remedies:

Household items like isopropanol and ethanol can also combat mold spores: Brush them on, let them sit for 30 minutes, repeat, and wipe off. The alcohol evaporates. Caution: Due to the risk of fire, ventilate the area and do not smoke.

Cleaning:

Depending on the extent of the infestation, household dust may still be laden with many spores. Clean thoroughly with windows open. Vacuum and wipe surfaces and furniture. Dispose of vacuum cleaner bags. Empty and clean the vacuum cleaner outside.

Prevention:

Mold growth is associated with excessive moisture. Proper heating and ventilation can help prevent it.

Ventilation:

The most effective method is cross-ventilation from one fully open window to another across the apartment. Often, airing the rooms for five minutes four times a day is sufficient for complete air exchange. Additionally, ventilate after showering and cooking.

Heating:

Dry cold winter air from outside can absorb much moisture in the warm apartment and expel it during the next airing. Room temperatures around 20 degrees Celsius are ideal, slightly higher in the bathroom and living room, slightly lower in the bedroom. Allow air circulation. Warm heating air must be able to circulate freely. Do not place cabinets and other furniture against cold exterior walls. Do not cover radiators.

Measuring humidity:

The relative humidity in rooms should not exceed about 60 percent, and along walls, it should not exceed 80 percent. Use a hygrometer to measure. Simple devices start at around 10 euros/10,85 USD.

🌞 BEAT THE HEAT!⛅

The world is a book, and those who do not travel, read only a page.
- St. Augustine

Beat the Heat: Prepare to Dominate the Scorching Heat at the Olympics in Paris

"Citius-Altius-Fortius," the three Latin words translating to "faster-higher-stronger," epitomize the spirit of the Olympic Games.

However, in contemporary times, they could signify a new "Normal" amidst weather-related disasters. Let's cross our fingers that Paris is adequately prepared since air conditioning isn't always a given.

It would certainly be a boon to have pools and parks open all night during heatwaves. Fortunately, it seems like shades, shelters, beverage stations, and misting zones are on the agenda.

But what can you, as an individual, do to combat the heat?

  1. Take breaks: The combination of heat, humidity, and exertion can swiftly lead to heat illness. Follow the lead of the Romans and Spaniards; organize your day around the heat. Don't scoff at the siesta culture—it's a savvy survival strategy.

Eat for the heat: Digesting food acts like a furnace, increasing your body temperature. Opt for smaller, more frequent meals. Alongside your water breaks (and you're in luck, as French water like Evian is top-rated), replenish your fluids with salads, fruits, and cold soup.

  1. Dress appropriately: White and light-colored clothing reflects heat, keeping you cooler. Don't forget sunscreen and your hat. Handheld fans, pocket fans, cooling sprays, and cooling towels are optional but helpful accessories.

With crowds abound, hygiene is paramount. Wash your hands frequently and resist touching your face.

Ensure your phone, tablet, or laptop is armed with security software to fend off malware and viruses.

Be vigilant against pickpocketing and scams, and have an escape plan in mind if needed. And remember, enjoy the festivities, but don't blame anyone if the weather surprises you with a cool and rainy day.

It's 2024, and anything can happen.

This is more than just a guide; it's an in-your-face educational opinion piece—a call to arms against the sweltering heat, urging you to conquer it with strategy, resilience, and a dash of French savoir-faire.

Famous last words,

February 2024

No historian can take part with-or against-the forces he has to study. To him even the extinction of the human race should merely be a fact to be grouped with other vital statistics.
- Henry Brooks Adams

Welcome to the New Normal: A Feast of Climate Chaos

As we sit here aboard the Titanic of our times, crossing a tempestuous Atlantic, it seems fitting to indulge in one final meal from the first-class menu: Whitefish.

For February has served us a platter of ominous tidings from around the globe, and facing such challenges on an empty stomach would be folly indeed.

Let's take a whirlwind tour of the world's woes: Atmospheric rivers inundate California, North America shivers in the grip of -50°C, Eastern Canada is buried under meters of snow, El Niño fans the flames of infernos in Chile, and John Podesta steps up as our new climate czar. Meanwhile, BP gleefully ramps up oil production, smog chokes the Lombardy region of Italy, Brazil battles a Dengue emergency, and Southern Africa grapples with the deadliest Cholera outbreak in decades.

But wait, there's more! Paris crafts an art form out of elevated parking fees for SUVs, while whispers of an impending ice age haunt Northern Europe. And if that weren't enough, defense ministers warn of Russian aggression in both outer space and on NATO soil within the next five years.

Yet amidst this cacophony of crises, perhaps the most chilling revelation comes from a U.S. study: half of disaster-displaced individuals report encountering fraudsters amidst their plight. Could it be that in our darkest hours, we find not only nature but our fellow humans arrayed against us?

As we brace for the potential return of the self-styled King of Con, envisioning a future where "The United States of Con" adorns our banknotes, it's clear that February 2024 has delivered a stark lesson. While the Conservative and Progressive Conservative factions flounder in the face of the new "Normal," it's up to the rest of us to adapt and overcome.

The mantra of our times is simple: The hot will grow hotter, the cold colder, the wet wetter, and the dry drier. Violent storms will become our unwelcome companions, battering our shores with increasing frequency. And amidst it all, batteries will balk at extreme cold, leaving electric car owners longing for the shelter of a garage, or in North America's case, an empty one.

In the words of the old German adage, "Wer nicht hören will muss fühlen" – "The one who doesn`t want to listen must feel". We ignored the warnings, denied the signs, and now find ourselves teetering between chaos and death, with only Plan C and Plan D as our dubious guides.

But let us not succumb to despair. Instead, let us raise our forks defiantly and proclaim: Bon appétit! For in the face of adversity, there is still the power to savor life, to fight for change, and to forge a path towards a better, more resilient future. This is not just an opinion piece – it's a rallying cry for action in the face of impending catastrophe.

Modern History

The greed of gain has no time or limit to its capaciousness. Its one object is to produce and consume. It has pity neither for beautiful nature nor for living human beings. It is ruthlessly ready without a moment`s hesitation to crush beauty and life out of them, molding them into money.
- Rabindranath Tagore

In the fantasy world of 2022, Bitcoin enthusiasts were fervently chanting their mantra: "Bitcoin was made for this moment." They painted a picture of digital gold, a doomsday insurance against the tumultuous waves of traditional financial markets. Yet, as reality cruelly unfolded, Bitcoin's value plummeted, shattering the illusion of its invincibility.

Why the disappointment? One glaring reason stands out amidst the chaos: cryptocurrencies remain a convoluted mess for the average person, especially during crises like war.

In Ukraine, where the need for financial refuge was most urgent, even the country's elite struggled to grasp the intricacies of converting assets into crypto.

The promised safe haven turned out to be nothing more than a mirage, leaving many stranded in a sea of uncertainty.

Let's fast forward to the grim truth of 2022. As food and water vanished, as electricity flickered into oblivion, and as the very fabric of society tore apart, cryptocurrencies offered little solace.

Bartering replaced monetary exchange, a stark reminder of humanity's primal instincts resurfacing amidst chaos. In this dystopian landscape, the notion of Bitcoin as a savior crumbled into dust, exposing the harsh reality of its limitations.

And now, in 2024, the consequences of our folly loom large. Cryptocurrencies, once heralded as the future of finance, stand exposed for what they truly are: a testament to humanity's insatiable greed and chronic laziness.

Rather than learning from history, we've embraced a digital illusion, forsaking the fundamental principles upon which our societies are built.

It doesn't require a genius to see through the facade. Cryptocurrencies are not the answer; they are the symptom of a deeper malaise—a society blinded by the allure of quick riches and technological utopia. The fact that the young, the supposed torchbearers of progress, have fallen prey to this deception is a tragedy of immense proportions.

In the face of this stark reality, we must confront the uncomfortable truth: cryptocurrencies are not the solution; they are a symptom of our collective failure to heed the lessons of the past.

It's time to abandon the fantasy and embrace the hard work of rebuilding our societies on principles of resilience, responsibility, and genuine progress. The future depends on it, and it's high time we stopped chasing digital dreams and started building a world grounded in reality.

EXAMPLES OF SECURITY IMPLICATIONS OF CLIMATE CHANGE AT HOME AND ABROAD • For the homeland, extreme weather events exacerbated by climate change have caused hardships for millions of Americans, and have the long-term potential to undermine training capability and readiness. Extreme events have cost the United States billions of dollars in damages in recent years, such as at Tyndall Air Force Base and Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune.

• In the Arctic, climate change is dramatically altering the natural environment and creating a new frontier of geostrategic competition.
• In the Indo-Pacific, sea-level rise and more extreme weather events complicate the security environment, place key DoD warfighting infrastructure and surrounding communities at risk, and challenge local capacity to respond. For example, the United States has important defense assets located in Guam, the Marshall Islands, and Palau, all of which are vulnerable to these hazards. Additionally, competitors such as China may try to take advantage of climate change impacts to gain influence. (Department of Defense, October 2021).

Extreme Waves Hit US Army Base In The Marshall Islands.

The recent reports from the Department of Homeland Security, Department of Defense, National Security Council, and the intelligence community paint a grim picture of the profound impact climate change is having on global stability and security. It's abundantly clear that climate change isn't just an environmental issue—it's a pressing national security threat that demands urgent attention.

One of the most alarming aspects highlighted in these reports is the strong link between climate change and migration, particularly in regions already vulnerable to environmental stressors. As the climate crisis worsens, we're witnessing an uptick in displacement and migration driven by factors like extreme weather events, food shortages, and resource competition.

The predictions of tens of millions of people being displaced by 2050, with a significant portion hailing from South Asia, sub-Saharan Africa, and Latin America, should serve as a wake-up call to policymakers worldwide. These climate-fueled migrations won't just strain resources and infrastructure in affected regions—they'll also exacerbate tensions, both within and between nations. (Department Of Defense, October 2021)

How Climate Change Drives Migration to the U.S.

Since the 19th century, the United States government has participated and interfered, both overtly and covertly, in the replacement of many foreign governments.

In the latter half of the 19th century, the U.S. government initiated actions for regime change mainly in Latin America and the southwest Pacific, including the Spanish–American and Philippine–American wars.

At the onset of the 20th century, the United States shaped or installed governments in many countries around the world, including neighbors Hawaii, Panama, Honduras, Nicaragua, Mexico, Haiti, and the Dominican Republic.

 Stay Alert! Be Prepared!

Any dictator would admire the uniformity and obedience of the U.S. media.
- Noam Chomsky

Are autocrats back in vogue? It seems so, riding high on a wave of adaptation. They've polished their image, becoming less overtly brutal, with only a select few clinging to the old-school repression tactics of their 20th-century idols.

Today's autocrats have mastered the art of incremental erosion, systematically weakening courts, civil society, and political opponents until victory at the polls is all but guaranteed.

They've become masters of manipulating public opinion across every available channel, blurring the line between fact and fiction until truth itself becomes a casualty.

They craft enemies, stoking resentment primarily against the liberal elite, the West, Muslim immigrants, and LGBTQ communities.

But that's not all. They also know how to play the game, offering concrete benefits like child benefits, tax cuts, and minimum wage hikes to keep their populace appeased.

Citizens often find themselves voting for parties that undermine democracy, a trend that's somehow tolerated. For many, democracy is too abstract a concept, until it's vanished entirely.

Welcome to the era where the autocrat wears a modern mask, where oppression is subtle, and where democracy is a fragile notion easily trampled upon.

Wake up, people! The wolves aren't just at the door; they're already inside, gnawing away at the very foundations of freedom and justice.

It's time to reclaim our voices, to stand firm against the tide of tyranny, before the specter of democracy fades into oblivion.
