Germany Has Voted – And Climate Policy is the Biggest Casualty

Germany has spoken. The people have cast their ballots, and the results are undeniable: the country has taken a hard swerve to the right, leaving climate policy bleeding in the dust. 

In a historic election where the stakes were nothing short of planetary survival, voters overwhelmingly chose parties that either downplay or outright deny the urgency of the climate crisis.

A Climate Catastrophe by Popular Demand

Voter turnout was an impressive 82.5%, meaning 49,927,315 Germans participated in shaping the nation’s future. 

But here’s the real headline: 29,103,128 of them voted against an effective climate plan. 

That’s right—more than half of voters deliberately opted for a government that either refuses to act on climate change or actively seeks to dismantle existing policies.

The CDU/CSU secured 14,158,432 votes. The AfD—a party that outright denies human-caused climate change—bagged 10,327,148. Add in the FDP (2,148,878) and the BSW (2,468,670), and it becomes painfully clear: 

Germans have knowingly chosen stagnation over climate action. This isn’t some political accident or a miscalculated protest vote. 

This is a conscious, collective decision to prioritize short-term economic fears over long-term planetary stability.

The CDU’s Facade of Moderation Is a Joke

Friedrich Merz, the CDU’s new chancellor, made a big show of promising a ‘policy shift,’ including in climate policy. 

His solution? Scrap the Building Energy Act, double down on emissions trading, and dangle an illusory ‘climate bonus’ with no real financial backing. And yet, voters ate it up. 

They believed the man who once called climate activists “criminals” and mocked renewable energy policies.

Let’s be brutally honest: the CDU/CSU’s climate strategy is not a plan—it’s a deliberate deception. 

It’s designed to sound like action while ensuring the status quo remains untouched. If emissions trading alone were the answer, we wouldn’t be in a crisis. 

And let’s not forget that Merz’s CDU is in lockstep with the AfD when it comes to economic and migration policies—both of which have major climate implications. 

Austerity-driven economics stifle green investments, while harsh migration policies ignore the fact that climate change is already displacing millions worldwide.

The AfD: Fossil Fuels and Fantasy Politics

The AfD is at least honest in its absurdity: they reject the science of climate change altogether and want to keep burning fossil fuels like there’s no tomorrow—because, at this rate, there really won’t be. 

But the most disturbing part? Over 10 million Germans looked at the existential threat of climate collapse and said, ‘You know what? Let’s accelerate it.’

This is beyond political ideology—it’s a death cult disguised as governance. The AfD's stance should be political suicide in a rational world, yet here they are, gaining ground, fueled by voters who have decided that climate denial is a viable policy stance.

Germany’s Missed Wake-Up Call

In 2021, climate policy was at the forefront of political discourse. 

The SPD, Greens, and FDP, despite their many failings, at least promised climate action. 

And yes, progress was made: renewable energy expansion accelerated, and emissions decreased. But the transition was not painless. Rising CO₂ prices hit consumers, and the promised climate money never materialized. Instead of demanding better implementation, the electorate threw the baby out with the bathwater and turned to parties that will drag the country backward.

Now, the price of this political whiplash will be dire. While emissions might be shrinking in Germany, they continue to rise globally, and the new government’s lax stance will only make things worse. 

The CDU claims to want ‘climate neutrality by 2045,’ but without concrete action, this is as good as a fantasy.

Voters Have Chosen Economic Fear Over Ecological Reality

One argument often made for this shift is economic anxiety. People are tired of rising costs, energy prices, and green policies that seem to demand personal sacrifice. 

But here’s the harsh truth: there is no economy on a dead planet. The longer climate action is delayed, the higher the costs will be—not just financially, but in human lives.

Germans didn’t just vote for conservative economics; they voted for an illusion. The CDU’s ‘climate neutrality through the market’ is a lie. 

The AfD’s fossil fuel fantasy is a disaster. 

And the FDP’s corporate-friendly environmental deregulation will only make things worse. (Good, they are out!)

The Road Ahead: A Climate Backlash Is Inevitable

The tragic irony of this election is that the consequences will come faster than voters expect. 

Climate disasters don’t care about political timelines. In the next few years, Germany will face record-breaking heatwaves, food supply disruptions, and an energy crisis that no amount of nostalgic longing for coal and gas can fix.

By then, will voters realize their mistake? Or will they double down, blaming migrants, the EU, or some vague ‘climate lobby’ for the consequences of their own choices?

This is the crossroads Germany stands at. The people have voted. The right has won. And climate policy has lost.

Now, the only question that remains is: how much suffering will it take for them to wake up?

The United States has entered a phase of political discourse where truth is no longer a guiding principle. 

Facts are malleable, reality is negotiable, and lies are not just tolerated but embraced. At the center of this transformation stands Donald Trump, a man whose entire existence is a testament to the power of brazen deception.

Trump does not merely distort facts; he annihilates them. He has constructed an alternate universe where he is infallible, where failures are always someone else’s fault, and where inconvenient truths simply do not exist. 

This is not politics as usual. This is something far more dangerous—a sustained, systemic war on reality itself.

Take his economic claims. Trump has relentlessly repeated the lie that he built the “greatest economy in history.” The repetition was so constant that even some critics started accepting it as partially true. 

In reality, his economic record was middling at best, with job growth simply continuing the trend of the Obama years. But in Trump’s world, perception trumps reality, and the lie becomes the truth through sheer force of will.

Then there’s the 2020 election. The cornerstone of Trump’s post-truth legacy is his relentless, unfounded assertion that the election was stolen. 

Courts dismissed over 60 lawsuits challenging the results. His own officials declared it the most secure election in history. Yet, a large portion of Americans remain convinced he was the rightful winner. The lie has become an article of faith, immune to evidence, immune to reality.

This distortion of truth has deadly consequences. Trump’s mishandling of COVID-19, fueled by a barrage of misinformation, led to hundreds of thousands of preventable deaths. 

His dismissal of climate change as a “Chinese hoax” has set back efforts to combat the most existential crisis of our time. 

His denials of Russian election interference gave foreign adversaries free rein to undermine democracy.

 And worst of all, his lies inspired an armed insurrection at the U.S. Capitol—a violent attack on democracy itself.

But Trump is not an anomaly. He is the inevitable product of a right-wing media ecosystem built on deception. 

From Newt Gingrich’s venomous rhetoric to Rush Limbaugh’s conspiratorial rants, the GOP has long thrived on an alternative reality where facts are inconvenient nuisances. 

Fox News, OAN, Newsmax, and an army of social media propagandists have cemented this reality into millions of minds. The strategy is simple: discredit mainstream journalism, flood the zone with bullshit, and make your audience believe only you.

The consequences of this post-truth era extend far beyond Trump. It erodes democracy itself. A population that cannot agree on basic facts cannot engage in rational debate. 

A government that operates on lies cannot function effectively. A society where propaganda is indistinguishable from truth is a society doomed to collapse under its own delusions.

So what happens next? 

Does reality snap back? 

Does truth reclaim its place? 

Or does America continue down the rabbit hole, spiraling further into fantasy and chaos?

Trump’s enablers, both in government and media, will keep pushing his lies because they are profitable and politically expedient. 

Millions of Americans will keep believing them because they are comforting and affirming. And the rest of us? 

We are left to fight an uphill battle against an ever-expanding flood of misinformation, armed only with the fragile weapon of objective truth.

But reality, in the end, is undefeated. It does not care for political spin. 

Climate disasters will worsen. 

Economic instability will rise. 

The consequences of denial will come crashing down. 

And when they do, those still clinging to Trump’s fantasy will have no choice but to wake up—or be consumed by the wreckage of their own delusions.

The question is not if the truth will prevail, but how much damage will be done before it does.

Did Humanity Almost Go Extinct? A Scientific Debate on Our Ancestors’ Struggles

Today, over 8.1 billion people inhabit Earth. Yet, there were times when only a few thousand individuals of our species existed. 

The limited genetic diversity among modern humans suggests that we all descend from a small ancestral group. Some archaeologists and paleoanthropologists argue that Homo sapiens came perilously close to extinction. 

However, experts debate when and how this near-catastrophe occurred, with three dominant theories emerging.

The First Population Crash – 900,000 Years Ago

A 2023 study from Chinese researchers published in Science suggested that our ancestors nearly vanished 900,000 years ago. 

Their analysis of the genomes of 3,154 living individuals indicated a massive population decline in the lineage leading to modern humans. According to their findings, the ancestral human population shrank from around 100,000 to just 1,300 individuals—a staggering 99% reduction.

This event, occurring long before Homo sapiens evolved, would have affected Homo heidelbergensis, the likely ancestor of Neanderthals, Denisovans, and modern humans. 

The researchers propose that this decline resulted from extensive glaciation and prolonged droughts. However, they suggest that mastery of fire later enabled these populations to rebound.

The Second Bottleneck – 150,000 Years Ago

A competing hypothesis, championed by archaeologist Curtis Marean, posits that Homo sapiens faced a dire survival crisis around 150,000 years ago. 

Marean and his team point to genetic calculations suggesting that as few as a few hundred individuals survived a severe ice age.

According to this theory, the last humans clung to existence in southern Africa while glaciers covered much of the world. Marean’s excavations at Pinnacle Point, a coastal cave site in South Africa, uncovered evidence of shellfish consumption, indicating that these humans relied on marine resources. 

Additionally, researchers believe they supplemented their diets with large mammals like antelopes and plant tubers found in the region’s grasslands, which remained viable despite the harsh climate.

The Toba Catastrophe – 74,000 Years Ago

Perhaps the most dramatic theory of human near-extinction involves the Toba supervolcano eruption on Sumatra 74,000 years ago. 

This was the most powerful volcanic eruption that humanity has ever experienced. The massive explosion ejected enough ash to darken the sky, causing global temperatures to plummet. Many plants died, leading to widespread famine.

Some scientists argue that only a few thousand humans survived in isolated pockets, particularly in southern Africa. 

This aligns with evidence that other species—such as chimpanzees, orangutans, tigers, and cheetahs—also suffered dramatic population declines around this time.

However, the Toba catastrophe theory has faced increasing skepticism. Recent archaeological discoveries suggest that human populations persisted in multiple regions despite the eruption. 

Even on Flores, an island relatively close to Sumatra, the small-statured early human species Homo floresiensis appears to have survived.

Scientific Disagreements and the Limits of Genetic Data

While these three theories attempt to explain potential population bottlenecks, not all experts agree. Populations geneticist Stephan Schiffels from the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig doubts that human numbers ever dwindled as drastically as some models suggest. 

He argues that while the human lineage may have faced hardships, the genetic data do not conclusively prove that Homo sapiens ever dropped to just a few hundred individuals within the last 300,000 years.

Furthermore, estimating ancient population sizes through genetics becomes increasingly uncertain the further one looks back in time. 

Schiffels also questions the accuracy of the Chinese study, suggesting that their conclusions may be flawed. While it remains possible that humanity came close to extinction, definitive proof remains elusive.

The Turning Point: Agriculture and Industrialization

Regardless of past population declines, one fact is clear: since the advent of agriculture around 11,000 years ago, humanity has never again faced existential risk due to population loss. 

The development of farming led to sustained population growth, which accelerated dramatically with the Industrial Revolution.

By the early 19th century, human numbers began increasing exponentially. The United Nations projects that global population growth will continue until 2084, peaking at approximately 10.3 billion people. 

After that, declining birth rates are expected to cause a gradual population decline. However, with the sheer number of humans alive today, extinction is not a concern in the foreseeable future.

Lessons from Our Past

While we may never know for certain whether humanity truly stood on the brink of annihilation, these theories provide valuable insights into our ancestors’ resilience. 

Whether through climate adaptations, resourceful survival strategies, or sheer luck, humans have repeatedly overcome catastrophic events.

Our history teaches us that while challenges arise, adaptability and innovation can ensure survival. 

As we face modern threats such as climate change, pandemics, and resource scarcity, understanding our past may offer guidance for navigating the future.

Similarly, curcumin from turmeric, especially when combined with piperine (from black pepper), can pose risks to liver health.

Is Vitamin C Overrated?

Vitamin C is one of the best-selling supplements in Germany and Switzerland. While it is essential for human health—deficiency can lead to scurvy—its importance is often exaggerated. 

Given that a wide variety of foods naturally contain vitamin C, deficiency is rare in Europe. Supplementing with additional vitamin C is generally unnecessary.

Even during the cold season, extra vitamin C offers no real benefits for the general population. The only exceptions might be extreme conditions, such as high-intensity endurance sports in cold weather, where supplementation could slightly reduce the risk of respiratory infections.

Should You Take Multivitamins?

Romanian election candidate condemns decision to cancel vote after 'Russian interference'

Welcome to the Circus: The Irony of Election Meddling Comes Full Circle

It’s official: the world has lost its damn mind. The United States—the global hall monitor of democracy—has suddenly fixated on Romania, of all places, because apparently, when it comes to election meddling, the Russians need a break. 

Washington’s new hobby? Condemning the annulment of Romania’s presidential election like it actually gives a shit about fair democratic processes. 

But let’s not kid ourselves—this isn’t about values. This is about the ultimate boomerang of irony, launched in 2015 when Donald J. Trump first cracked open Pandora’s box of election doubt, and now it’s come back to smack America square in its Botoxed face.

Let’s rewind. Trump, the undisputed king of grievance politics, set the stage by screaming “RIGGED!” before a single vote was cast in 2016. 

Then he won—but not the popular vote, so, naturally, he blamed illegal immigrants in California for padding Clinton’s numbers. 

Fast forward to 2020: cue the insurrection highlight reel, where his loyalists stormed the Capitol because their messiah got bested by Sleepy Joe. 

Now, in 2024, we’re back on the "rigged elections" carousel, but instead of questioning America’s own dumpster fire of a democracy, the new target is... Romania? 

Because their deep state is apparently too obvious in rigging elections compared to the polished corruption of Washington D.C.?

Here’s the so-called scandal: the Romanian Constitutional Court invalidated the first round of the 2024 presidential election because a previously unknown ultranationalist, Calin Georgescu, surged ahead in the polls with the help of a TikTok campaign. 

The court blamed foreign interference—wink wink, Moscow—but let’s be honest, canceling an entire election over a couple of boosted videos smells more like a panic attack from Romania’s security services than a principled stand for democracy. 

And yet, U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance is suddenly the world’s loudest election integrity advocate, warning about “totalitarian tendencies in the EU.” 

The guy who serves under Trump—whose party literally tried to overturn an election—now has the audacity to cry foul when another country does it? You can’t make this up.

But here’s the kicker: Vance, a MAGA lapdog, took his outrage one step further, implying that Germany might be next in the EU’s supposed plot to cancel elections they don’t like. 

This, of course, is based on a misinterpretation of an EU official’s comment about regulating TikTok—because what’s a good conspiracy without a dash of deliberate misinformation? 

Meanwhile, the Romanian establishment, including the shadowy figures still lurking from the old Securitate regime, conveniently benefits from the annulment. 

Somehow, the same people who cry about deep state operatives in the U.S. don’t seem to notice when the same forces pull the strings in Eastern Europe.

And just when you thought this mess couldn’t get any weirder—enter Elon Musk. 

The world’s richest shitposter decided to wade into Romanian politics, retweeting claims that the election annulment was orchestrated by a judge linked to George Soros. 

Because of course Soros is involved. If a cat gets stuck in a tree, it’s probably Soros. If your Wi-Fi is slow, Soros did it. 

Meanwhile, far-right Romanian politician George Simion is practically fanboying over Musk, even inviting him to Bucharest for a playdate in the nationalist sandbox.

Oh, and let’s not forget the cherry on top: former Trump ambassador Richard Grenell reportedly tried to pull strings to get Andrew and Tristan Tate—Romania’s most famous misogynistic influencers—released from their travel ban. 

Apparently, the U.S. government is now an international legal defense fund for alpha-male podcasters who got caught trafficking women. 

Romania denies any such request was made, but when a conman like Grenell gets involved (Once an adviser to GOP moderates like 2012 presidential nominee Mitt Romney and a supporter of gay marriage, Grenell, who is openly gay, deleted social media posts blasting Trump as “reckless” and “dangerous” once the former reality TV star became the Republican nominee in 2016), you know reality is on a break.

And just to keep the anxiety levels high, rumors are swirling that Trump might actually entertain Russia’s demand for NATO’s withdrawal from Eastern Europe. 

Because, you know, nothing says ‘stable genius’ like abandoning your allies to the Kremlin’s embrace. 

Romania, which has spent decades begging for more American troops as a buffer against Putin, is now staring down the possibility that their most powerful ally might ghost them if it benefits Trump’s business interests or flatters his dictator envy.

So here we are. The country that gave the world the Big Lie, Stop the Steal, and an attempted coup now wants to lecture Romania on democratic values. 

The guy who spent years delegitimizing elections is suddenly horrified that another country might be doing the same. 

The political movement that screamed about a ‘deep state’ is now supporting shadowy intelligence agencies cancelling votes in a foreign country. 

And the billionaires who peddle free speech absolutism are suddenly very invested in a country’s right-wing populists getting their turn at power.

The lesson? Hypocrisy is a hell of a drug, and America’s political elites are overdosing hard. 

But don’t worry—if this is all just performance art, at least we now know the genre: dark comedy, with an extra dose of absurdity.
