Picture this: the German Physical Society and the German Meteorological Society drop their so-called “Climate Call 2025” like a warning flare over a burning ship—and what happens? Instead of grabbing buckets, too many scientists and commentators complain the flare was too bright. Alarmist. Excessive. “A disservice to science.” Spare me.

Oh, so that’s comforting? Two degrees instead of three? That’s the defense? Two degrees is catastrophic enough to destabilize agriculture, flood coastlines, and hammer ecosystems into collapse. We’ve already cooked the planet by +1.5°C—and people are still writing smug op-eds pretending scientists are guilty of overstatement.
Let’s be blunt: the debate about whether warming accelerates or merely continues is academic hairsplitting while the planet roasts. Natural variability, one-off pollution reductions, aerosols—yes, they matter. But none of them erase the clear acceleration of disasters: megadroughts, glacier collapse, wildfire smoke choking entire continents. Call it “alarmist” if you want, but the alarms are real.
The Food Lie
The Climate Call dares to state that by 2050, food production could drop 6–14%, putting another half a billion to a billion humans at risk of hunger. Critics rush to wave this away: “Food production has only gone up! We’ll adapt! Agriculture will innovate!”
This is the same fairy tale told by every empire before collapse: Don’t worry, we’ll engineer our way out of the crisis. But the soil doesn’t give a damn about your optimism. Try growing wheat in 47°C heat, or corn without water. Try feeding billions when half your topsoil blows away in dust storms. Sure, yield curves rose in the past—but the past had a stable climate. The future does not.
And ignoring worst-case studies because they sound “too extreme”? That’s not science. That’s cowardice. Science must consider extremes, because we are living in one.
Survival of Civil Society
The most controversial line of the Climate Call reads like a dagger: “The acceleration of global warming represents a very high risk for the survival of civil societies.”
Cue the pearl-clutching. Oh, that’s too radical. Not all members agreed. It sounds like activism, not science.
Here’s the uncomfortable truth: the survival of civil societies is at risk. We’ve already seen heat-fueled uprisings, migration crises, collapsing states, and billion-dollar disasters. When glaciers vanish, when rivers dry, when coastlines retreat—what’s left of “civil society”?
To pretend otherwise is malpractice. And yet here we are, watching scientific societies apologize for sounding the alarm too loudly.
The Real Disservice
The critics say the Climate Call is a “disservice to science” because it risks credibility, blurring lines between research and activism. Wrong. The real disservice is silence. The real disservice is pretending moderation is safer than truth.
We’ve had thirty years of “measured statements” and “consensus reports.” And emissions still rise. CO₂ keeps climbing. “Balance” hasn’t saved us—it’s lulled us into complacency.
Alarmism is not the problem. Understatement is.
Hold the Skull, Face the Truth
If the German physicists and meteorologists went too far, good. If their words make you uncomfortable, better. Science without courage is just paperwork.
The critics want science to remain a polite whisper. But the planet is screaming. Every flood, every fire, every famine is the skull in our hands, asking: To act, or not to act? That is the question.
And if we keep choosing not to act, there won’t be anyone left to debate whether the warnings were too shrill.
