Autoland’s reckoning: Are German cars a thing of the Past? | To The Point
π₯ THE GREAT GERMAN AUTO LIE: HOW THE CAR LOBBY IS DRIVING EUROPE STRAIGHT INTO CHINA’S ARMS π₯
An unfiltered, unbiased, raging op-ed that Berlin and Brussels will never publish
For decades, Germany built cars like vault doors with wheels: over-engineered tanks that could survive a world war, but pampered with every sexy gadget under the sun. ABS, AWD, ESC, adaptive suspension — if the Germans didn’t invent it, they perfected it. Stuttgart, Munich, Wolfsburg: the holy trinity that turned a bombed-out nation into a chrome-plated global superpower.
But then came the drivetrain revolution. Electric. Hybrid. Battery tech.
And Germany?
They overslept.
They clutched their beloved diesel engines like a pacifier and handed the future to Tesla and the Chinese on a silver platter.
Now?
Their dealerships are full of EVs no normal German can afford. A Volkswagen ID.3 — supposedly the “people’s car” of the green era — starts at €30,000 and can easily rocket to €48,000. For a compact. With a plastic dashboard. That’s not innovation — that’s highway robbery dressed up as sustainability.
And because they failed?
Volkswagen — the empire that once conquered Europe with Beetles — is now closing factories in Germany for the first time in 88 years. Panic is spreading. Politicians in Berlin and Brussels are sweating bullets. And their brilliant solution?
π Water down the European Green Deal.
π Extend the life support for gasoline and diesel.
π Roll back clean-air targets.
Because when the German auto lobby screams, Europe bows.
The Car Lobby Is a God — and the Majority Be Damned
In Germany, the automotive lobby is the real Bundestag. They decide the rules of the road. And they especially decide which roads keep their sacred place in national mythology.
The Autobahn — the temple of speed.
Every poll says most Germans want a speed limit.
But apparently… that’s the wrong majority.
Because the gods of horsepower won’t allow democracy to interfere with 250 km/h egos.
Electrify the transport sector?
Cut emissions?
Save lives?
Nah. Gas down, eyes closed, climate off.
Germany’s Electric Vehicle Fairy Tale: Buy an EV… if You’re Rich
The government brags about incentives for EVs. Want the truth?
They only subsidize the upper class.
You get a rebate if you’re wealthy enough to:
✔ Own a private parking space
✔ Install a €1,200 home charger
✔ Pay Europe’s third-highest electricity prices
If you live in an apartment?
If you earn normal money?
If you can’t drop €500 a month on your power bill alone?
Then the green transition isn’t for you.
You get fumes. You get noise. You get empty promises.
Europe Rolls Back, China Rolls Forward
While Europe pats the car industry to sleep with warm diesel blankets, China is lapping the field:
-
Cheaper EVs
-
Faster innovation
-
Batteries the world depends on
-
Massive global market growth
They don’t ask permission from their auto lobby — they build, they export, they dominate.
And guess what?
Hungary — yes, Viktor OrbΓ‘n’s Hungary — is now becoming China’s EV aircraft carrier inside the EU. Build the cars there and — voilΓ — no tariffs. A Trojan Horse on four wheels.
Europe just handed the keys of the future to Beijing… and begged them to drive.
Pressure Creates Progress — Europe Just Let It All Escape
Some industries need the threat of extinction to evolve.
The German auto industry?
They need a kick so hard it leaves a boot mark on the grille.
But instead of forcing them to innovate, Europe has thrown them a life preserver made of solid petrol:
“Take your time, dear automakers! Keep burning hydrocarbons! The future can wait!”
π It won’t.
π China isn’t waiting.
π The climate definitely isn’t waiting.
So Let’s Call It What It Is
Germany’s auto “strategy” today is:
π« No real speed limits
π« No real EV affordability
π« No real infrastructure
π« No real incentives for the masses
π« No real vision of the future
But plenty of excuses to protect the sacred cows of Stuttgart and Wolfsburg.
The Consequence?
Every watered-down regulation…
Every delayed climate goal…
Every bargain German families NEVER get…
…is a direct gift to the Chinese auto industry.
A giant “Danke schΓΆn” note taped to every BYD battery pack rolling onto European roads.
Final Thought
Germany once led the world because it dared to build the future.
Now it’s desperately clinging to the past — and expecting us to cheer while the global automotive empire burns from the inside out.
The smartest thing Europe could do right now?
π₯ Stop protecting the companies that refused to evolve.
π₯ Stop bending the knee to the car lobby.
π₯ Force innovation — even if it hurts.
π₯ Make clean mobility actually affordable — not a luxury toy.
Because if the “People’s Car” can’t be bought by the people,
then what the hell is Germany even building anymore?
yours truly,
