The Government Won’t Save You: How to Fight for Climate Justice Like a Swiss Senior

The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice—only if someone grabs it and yanks like hell.”

In a world of carefully worded climate strategies, delayed legislation, and fossil-funded lobbyists, one truth remains clear: the fight for climate justice won’t be won by governments.

It will be won by ordinary people doing extraordinary things—like a band of Swiss grandmothers who dragged a 2.5-ton protest stone across Europe to make sure their country didn’t forget it was judged guilty of climate negligence.

But what if your government shrugs at court rulings?

What if parliament dismisses global warming as “not their jurisdiction”?

What if the system itself is complicit?

Then you act anyway.

1. Understand: You’re Already in the Fight

Let’s be clear. If you breathe air, drink water, or eat food, you’re in this. Climate breakdown isn’t an “issue,” it’s a time bomb.

The Swiss government’s cold defiance of the European Court of Human Rights shows us exactly what not to do: bury responsibility under bureaucracy while the glaciers melt.

2. Use the Law Like a Weapon

Can’t count on politicians?

File lawsuits like the KlimaSeniorinnen did. Form legal alliances.

Support groups like Greenpeace, ClientEarth, or local environmental law firms. Demand your city or canton enshrine climate goals in binding law.

Want a tool? Check out:

You don’t have to be a lawyer to sue—just brave.

3. Defund the Fossil Empire

Your money is power.

Your pension? Probably invested in oil.

Your bank? Funding coal.

Your insurer? Betting against the future.

Take it back.

  • Move your accounts to ethical banks (e.g., Alternative Bank Schweiz, Triodos)

  • Pressure your pension fund to divest from fossil fuels

  • Demand transparency with your taxes—where’s your money going?

Use tools like:

4. Build Parallel Infrastructure

While governments stall, communities build. Set up local energy cooperatives, rooftop solar collectives, food forests, repair cafés, and climate hubs. Don’t wait for policy. Prototype the future.

In Switzerland? Look at:

In your own country? Start one.

5. Disrupt Business-as-Usual

Strike. Block. Occupy. Boycott.

The powers that be only care when their profits or reputations are at stake.

Nonviolent resistance worksit’s what forced Shell out of the Arctic.

Support or join groups like:

6. Shame the System

When the Swiss climate seniors hauled that stone to Bern and played "Bella Ciao," it wasn’t performance—it was moral indictment. They made themselves unignorable. You can too.

Use art. Use protest. Use grief. Use joy. Use it loud.

7. Protect What You Love, Not Just What’s “Policy”

This isn’t about carbon credits or UN targets. It’s about your rivers, your farms, your forests, your future children.

You don’t need permission to defend what’s sacred.

Bottom Line: The State Is Not Your Savior

When history looks back, it won’t ask what your emissions target was.

It’ll ask who stood up. Who resisted.

Who chose action when the powerful chose delay.

The Swiss grandmothers will be remembered. Not for their age, but for their courage.

What will your generation be remembered for?
